Are You a Fan of Dr. David Burns Too?

Did Dr. Burns' Book, Feeling Good Inspire You?

If you answered yes to either of these questions, you should take a few moments to explore this website and my novel, Grey Pine, which was partially inspired by the work of Dr.  David Burns.

A few years ago, I submitted part of this novel to Dr. Burns.   Dr. Burns was kind enough to write me back and wish me luck with Grey Pine.

Chapter Twenty-five of Grey Pine uses a few words similar to some terminology in Feeling Good, by Doctor David Burns (Morrow/Signet).

Doctor Burns has given inspiration to untold thousands of people, myself included.  Instead of easy answers from dogma or drugs, Doctor Burns offers intellectual tools we can use by ourselves, if we so choose.  He helps us look at our own decisions, not to cast guilt, but to see if at some point we stopped telling ourselves the truth.

So, if you like the work of Dr. Burns, take a minute to check out Grey Pine, a semi-historical novel that takes place after the 1980 ash fall from Mt. St. Helens, following the impact of the event on a small community east of the Cascade Range.  Phillip Stark, the main character, deals with both suicidal and homicidal depression as the story progresses.  After rejecting both a psychiatrist and a "positive thinking" counselor,  a third therapist helps him try to unravel the mental distortions which have exacerbated his clinical depression.   Phillip anguishes between accepting what he thinks he has learned or acting on violent impulse.
